What the tool does

How to use it

Capture or enter a point

Stand on the point and record it by GPS, or type known coordinates. Add a name and code so you recognise it in the list later.

Let the averaging settle

The sample counter shows how many readings have arrived. The longer you stand still, the steadier the average.

Open stakeout

Tap the compass icon beside any saved point, or enter a target coordinate directly.

Follow the arrow

The arrow holds the bearing to the target as you turn. The figure below it is remaining distance — walk until it drops close to zero.

Export

Send captured points to CSV for a spreadsheet, or to DXF so they land straight in the drawing.

How it behaves in the field

Why averaging

A single GPS fix wanders — under trees or against a wall, by several metres. Averaging a run of readings pulls the random error toward zero, so the stored point is steadier than any individual reading.

The arrow follows the phone, not north

The arrow shows where the target is relative to how you are holding the phone. You do not compute a bearing in your head — you turn until the arrow points ahead, then walk.

What phone accuracy means

A phone receiver gives metre-level positioning, which is enough to relocate a point, flag a route or orient yourself on a parcel. Cadastral setting-out still calls for survey-grade GNSS.

The point code

The code field sorts points by type — boundary, manhole, pole, spot height. Codes travel into the CSV and make later sorting onto layers straightforward.

Frequently asked questions

Does stakeout work without internet?

Yes. The phone's GPS and compass work without a mobile network, and the guidance is computed locally.

How accurate is stakeout with a phone?

On the order of a few metres, which is what a phone GPS receiver provides. That is enough to reach a point and mark an approximate position; for precise cadastral setting-out use a survey-grade GNSS receiver.

Can I stake out a point I never captured?

Yes. Alongside the list of saved points there is a direct target entry — type E and N and guidance starts immediately.

What format do captured points export to?

CSV for spreadsheet work, and DXF so the points drop straight into a drawing in CAD software.
